From UBA Preconference Day to Day 1 of the 2026 Consortium of State School Boards Associations (COSSBA), the energy and camaraderie are already on full display. On Day 1 came a powerful keynote from acclaimed actress, director and educator Phylicia Rashad, whose remarks centered on the transformative power of education, the importance of cultural stewardship and the responsibility leaders carry in shaping the next generation. One highlight was watching SCSBA Executive Director Scott Price and the executive team in action during COSSBA’s Annual Business Meeting. Alongside leaders from across the nation, they voted on bylaws, resolutions and advocacy position statements which help shape the future of school boards.Blowing in with a strong gust of inspiration was Rep. Brandon Guffey, who made the trip from the Upstate in his Volkswagen bus, affectionately nicknamed “The Struggle Bus.” His powerful story about how Gavin’s Law came to be, and how it is being implemented in South Carolina schools, was both moving and motivating. The momentum continued as Horry County Schools’ superintendent, along with a staff and board member, shared insights during “Strengthening Board Engagement Through School Visits.” Their message: meaningful connections with students, staff and schools help strengthen community trust. What an incredible start to a conference built on collaboration, learning and lifting each other up. The road ahead is bright.#TheStruggleIsReal#ThereIs1SouthCarolina ... See MoreSee Less
